Normally, The Accuser, steers clear the hell away from partisan politics. It's nasty, ugly, unreasonable, and dangerously close to aristocracy. However, when a juicy bit like this comes up... it's too much for our hypocrisy detectors to keep quiet.
The United States Senate has passed, 96-3, the renewal of the beloved Patriot Act. Now, this would fine, except for the fact that for the last few years, the Democrats have at the throats of the Republicans (mostly the administration) for allowing these intrusions into our personal lives. Interesting, though, that when the chance comes to do something about it, they do nothing.
It's clear why. The political parties are effectively the same. With a few choice differences (abortions for some, tiny American flags for others), they have the same stance. And that should be terrifying.
Keep all this in mind when we are forced to elect "someone new" for president in 2008.
The following legislators are exceptions, and therefore worthy of admiration.
Russ Feingold, D-Wis
Jim Jeffords, I-Ver
Robert Byrd, D-W.Va
Send 'em a missive and tell them they are doing the right thing. And the next time you hear one of the great Democracy legislators crapping on about how George Bush is ruining the country, send them this link and remind them they had a chance to do the right thing, and they screwed it up. Again.

Leo,
Yes, we all heard the "there's no difference between the two parties" mantra from the Naderistas in 2000. And we've been living with the consequences ever since, in ways so bad that a Naderista would now have to be in deep denial not to regret their vote and posture. The Democrat votes for the Patriot Act are shameful. But I'll still take my chances with the donkeys, even the jackasses among them. Bush & Co have exposed the lie of the purist tweedle-dee-and-tweedle-dum argument.
Roger,
I get a feeling that you equate being for the war with being for this current administration (or being a Republican). The two are not mutual. One can support the war and not give a damn about Bush. These things do exist (and should exist) regardless of party affiliation. When we start linking this kind of deeper political ideology with a political party (which clearly jump from platform to platform), those ideas begin to lose their inherent meaning. Much like what has happened with the war in Iraq.
Leo,
I don't equate being for the war with being for Bush. Sadly, both parties signed on for this disastrous folly. I WISH there had been more opposition and more forcing of debate on this. I WISH the issue had been more polarized. We are now in an untenable situation with no clear way out. No good is coming from this, for anyone.
I don't think any sentient being save for a handful of true believers in utter denial, think that any good will come out of this. Am I missing something? Is there something glorious happening in Iraq that has eluded the gaze of people on the scene, people who live there, people who are fighting and dying there? Is the water or electricity even running? You appear to be a thoughtful person --- is there something you're hanging onto that the rest of us (including people in the highest levels of the Bush administration) don't know about?
Roger,
I don't think I am holding anything back. When the invasion of Iraq began (the second one), I can't say that I was particularly enthused. However, as the war progressed, strangely enough, I became more convinced of the necessity of the west's need to intervene in the Middle East.
The good that I see, that you are asking about, is that world has two fewer dictatorships. And that democracy has spread to a part of the world where it had not been before.
Incidentally, I would urge you not to leave this discussion. I think it's good to hear all points of view, regardless of whether we disagree. I suspect there is less points of contention than appears

This is a smart blog. I mean it. You have so much knowledge about this issue, and so much passion. You also know how to make people rally behind it, obviously from the responses. Youve got a design here thats not too flashy, but makes a statement as big as what youre saying. Great job, indeed. Replica Watches
I agree with you. Patriotism is just an excuse for committing a lot of crimes in behalf of a country. Thanks for sharing this article. Viagra Generic Viagra
