Jyllands Posten Danish Mohammed Cartoons

A lot of people seem to coming here for the Jyllands-Posten Cartoons. So, I am making sure they are top of mind by reposting them up for those curious. I also firmly believe that it is our responsibility to post, repost and repost these images. Nobody has the right to take away freedom of speech, certainly not some religion. Print em out... hand em out on the street... post em on walls.

Why do European newspapers feel the need to exercise their legal rights by publishing offensive pictures of the Prophet? They are going from reporting the news to being the news. This is editorial recklessness, and while they are perfectly entitled to do it the question is should they?

They could only be classified as offensive if they were un-true. As it happens, the cartoons illustrate the exactly what would happen if such cartoons were published. I am curious as to why you think it's "editorial recklessness."

Actually, even true things can be a violation of the journalism code of ethics if they are classified as indulging in a "lurid curiosity." For instance, pornography or graphic images of dead or mutilated bodies is something that should be censored under the SPJ's code of ethics.

The editor of Jyllands-Posten, Flemming Rose, argues, however, that his cartoons are not gratuitously insulting because they serve the purpose of defending freedom of speech. Ultimately, then, they justify it by implying that the interest in upholding freedom of speech trumps the principle of not insulting others.

One wonders what the furore is all about. How mild they are ! I am glad Jyllands Post have done this, not because I want to offend anyone per se, but becasue if we allow religious prejudice and hocus pocus to trump freedom of speech, we are all heading for the mincer. I've decided to go to Denmark for my summer holidays, as a mark of support !
